Background

The family of an Italian woman who died after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine told Sky News they are taking legal action to determine if the injection was to blame.

The case comes after Augusta Turiaco, 55, from Messina, Sicily, was given a Covid-19 injection on March 11, after which her condition deteriorated rapidly in the days following the vaccination. [1]

  • Augusta developed a high fever and severe headache before undergoing blood tests and eventually scans that revealed blood clots.
  • She went into a coma on March 28 and died on March 30, 19 days after receiving the AstraZeneca injection.

Her brother Nunzio Turiaco told Sky News: “It was like a bolt from the blue for us to see such a disease. My sister was perfectly healthy, she did not take any medicines because she had no diseases such as high blood pressure or diabetes” . [1]

  • Medical records viewed by Sky News showed that blood clots had formed in Ms Turiaco’s body, including her brain.
  • Her platelets had fallen to a very low level. These are conditions that have been found in other people who have died after receiving the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. [1]
Augusta Turiaco

In recent weeks she had enthusiastically undergone the vaccination campaign, only to be involved in a nightmare that unfortunately had a disastrous outcome. She leaves behind her two children, two parents and two brothers who will carry with them the memory of a strong and present woman, capable of facing life’s difficulties with courage “. [2]

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has now changed its recommendation and recognized unusual blood clots as a very rare side effect of the vaccine. [1]

  • The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is still being rolled out in much of Europe, but publicity about blood clots has eroded confidence in the vaccine.
  • Denmark was the first country to announce that it would completely stop using the vaccine and has already announced that it will give away its vaccines to countries in need.
  • Other countries have suspended the use of the vaccine while studies are being conducted, and
  • some countries are now restricting its use to certain age groups.

Significance

Despite the assurances of politicians and the drug companies, the many reports of adverse reaction and deaths following the vaccines, puts into question the safety and efficacy of these inoculations, as well as who is liable.

The lawsuit filed by the family is just one of many cases being filed against AstraZeneca across Europe. [1]

Plaintiff’s Argument

The family’s attorney, Daniela Agnello, told Sky News: [1]

“The excellent state of health of Ms. Turiaco, the absence of previous pathologies, the very short time span between the administration of the vaccine, the appearance of the first symptoms and the very serious clinical picture and then death. We believe that these are all accurate, serious and coherent indications to demand a judicial investigation and establish the causal responsibilities that led directly or indirectly to death.”

Lawyer Agnello, who assists the family, presented a complaint to the prosecutor’s office which was also sent to other authorities including the German embassy. Augusta Turiaco, in fact, was also a German citizen.

Expert Testimony

On November 30, 2021, the medical examiner Fabrizio Perri, the infectious disease specialist Antonio Albanese and the pathologist Giovanni Bartolonisubmitted their testimony to prosecutors Federica Rende and Roberto Conte. [3]

“It is believed that the death of the Turiaco is to be put in a causal relationship with the administration of the Astrazeneca vaccine”. With these words the expert witnesses confirmed that the death of Augusta Turiaco is related to the vaccine of the British / Swedish pharmaceutical company. The three experts had no doubts, all histological and laboratory tests they gave negative results for the other hypotheses while they confirmed that the death occurred from the thrombosis caused by the vaccine. [3]

“Regarding the characteristics, the entity and the evolution of the manifested pathological picture of the Turiaco, the existence of any further alternative pathogenic causes is excluded (given the absolute negativity in this sense of the laboratory investigations carried out on the subject, with the exclusion of any immune disorders and / or infections) “, wrote in the final report presented to the power of attorney.
